Mane
Event The Winged Horse Extravaganza Charitable
Auction
|
A total of 34 members of our local
fiberglass herd were auctioned off October 10, 2004 at Sea Scape Golf Course in
Kitty Hawk. This Mane Event was the culmination of the Winged Horse
Extravaganza, a public art project sponsored by Outer Banks Press (and its
non-profit division, CitiArtFX) that began in 2002.

While the proceeds of this auction were primarily to benefit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund and the Monument to a Century of Flight, each sponsor had the option of designating an additional local charity. Some of our horse sponsors just couldn't part with their trusty steeds, and many donated gift certificates and other auction items instead. Sale prices ranged from $400 to $2,800, with CATCHTHESPIRIT bringing top dollar for the evening. Auctioned horses totaled just over $32,000 while expenses were nearly $20,000 (printing, postage, decorations, site rental, food and beverage service, and rental of tents, chairs, tables, flooring, lighting and linens). Outer Banks Press donated the difference so that $20,000 could be distributed among the following recipients: Icarus International, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, Hosea House, Cape Hatteras Methodist Men, MERCI/United Methodist Church, La Leche League, First Flight Lions Club, Dare County Public Library, Outer Banks Community Foundation, Feline Hope, Outer Banks SPCA, Community Care Clinic, Operation Smile, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Cape Hatteras Elementary School, Dare County Arts Council Foundation, Outer Banks Forum and the American Red Cross.
